The new year, along with two sought-after speakers, led instead to a record-breaking turn-out of 49 on Monday, January 2nd at Alberto's Italian Restaurant in Bennington, New Hampshire. Lions from 8 different clubs were present: Concord, Henniker, Hillsborough, Peterborough, Manchester, Nashua, Wilton, and, of course, us. :-)

Around the appetizing meal served by Alberto's, we first heard from Lion Ed Lecius, who is a candidate for an International Director position with Lions Clubs International. Mr. Lecius has been a Lion since 1971, was president of his Nashua club 3 times, and has been Nashua's "Lion of the Year" 5 times (along with many other awards both inside and outside of Lions).

The Academy is one of only a few public charter schools in New Hampshire -- and the only school in the state that offers a bilingual education of American Sign Language (ASL) and Printed English. Lions have always had a special focus on sight and hearing, and, according to Ms. Brule, the young academy wouldn't have been able to continue this school year if it weren't for a grant from the New Hampshire Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation (one of the charities benefiting from Antrim-Bennington Lions Club fundraisers). LCA has 6 full time students, a number that increases to almost 20 every Friday when regional homeschoolers have an opportunity to join in on the instruction.

The evening wrapped up with a long question and answer session with Ms. Brule and LCA Board Member (and Lion) Sue Auerbach. Anyone with interest in knowing more about Laurent Clerc Academy can contact them at (603) 223-6770.

About a year after her husband was inducted, Michelle Fahrner (seen here being presented a new member packet by President Linda Ward) became a Lion. She has already been a regular attendee of meetings and is a welcome addition to our club. Of course, the writer of this article is a bit prejudiced (in that she's his wife) :-)

Pictured here is the person who pulled number 1, and got to choose the first gift -- Lion Bob Hardy. You can see him describing what he chose so that a vision impaired attendee would have a fair chance at purloining his present if she wanted.

Especially compared to last year, there wasn't much "bloodletting" during the swap, and it should be noted that the first person to appropriate someone else's gift was Lion (and State Senator) Bob Flanders. He was far from alone, and was unable to keep the item he pilfered thanks to someone else with a larger number :-)

Without even a threat of fisticuffs, a great time was had by all!

Prior to the gift, if a student was in need of a hearing test, the school nurse either had to organize a special visit to the Great Brook Middle School or borrow an audiometer from another district school. Principal Debbie Lesure and School Nurse Judith Bernardi noted the importance of the machine, "Your donation plays an integral part in the health care we provide to the students here at Antrim Elementary School. Because of your donation, we will be able to detect hearing problems promptly and refer the students to qualified medical personal for follow-up care."

The audiometer was purchased with proceeds from the November 12th's annual Antrim-Bennington Lions Club Hunters Breakfast and a grant from the Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation of New Hampshire. At hand for the presentation were Ms. Lesure, Ms. Bernardi, Antrim-Bennington Lions Club President Linda Ward, Lion David Ward, Lion Sarah Edwards, Lion Alan Fahrner, and soon-to-be-Lion Michelle Fahrner.

(Sold Out) Annual Christmas Tree Sale

To the left is a picture of a happy snow-clearing crew at the beginning of what turned out to be the last weekend of Antrim-Bennington Lions Club Christmas tree sales this year -- although the photo does leave out a couple people actively using machinery to clear the most recent snowfall, and the cameraman did his fair share of shoveling :-).

Final figures will follow...but it's another year of record sales for our annual fundraiser. Proceeds go toward Operation Santa -- so as the trees add holiday cheer to area homes, the purchasers can know that many local children will have a merrier Christmas because their gift wishes will be fulfilled. Thanks to all who decided to get their trees from us!

I'm leaving the original web site announcement below, partially to show that we had planned on another weekend of sales, only to have great public support remove the need for it :-)

It's time for our annual Christmas Tree Sale!

The first three weekends in December (12/3-4, 10-11, & 17-18) you can head down to Tenney Farm on 1 Main Street in Antrim, New Hampshire and have a chance to purchase some of the best trees in the area. Although our costs have gone up, we've kept our price at only $30 per tree.

(The address above is a link to a Google map of the location, which will also allow you to get directions.)

Last year was a sell-out, so don't wait until the last weekend to grab one -- there may be none to grab!

Hours are 9-4 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.

All proceeds go back to the community, so be sure to visit -- even if you don't leave with a tree you can help warm up a couple Lions with good conversation :-)

(If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us.)

We received a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership patch

We voted to apply the funds raised from this past Saturday's annual Hunters Breakfast to the purchase of a hearing machine for the Antrim Elementary School (additional info to come on that)

Lion Linda Tenney provided very delicious frosted brownies :-)

A warm breakfast on a warm morning...

With winter approaching, the Antrim/Bennington area had its first "deep" freeze overnight (with one person reporting a low of 14 degrees). Luckily, when dawn broke it was time for our annual Antrim-Bennington Lions Club Hunters Breakfast. Nothing like a warm meal and hot coffee to take the chill off (one quick note about the coffee -- it was generously donated by the Antrim Dunkin' Donuts).

Over 60 people enjoyed a meal of eggs, ham, home fries, biscuits, and homemade baked beans. The first customers came before we even officially opened -- employees of Edmunds Hardware and Antrim Lumber snuck in prior to heading to work (the second photo in this post).

Speaking of pictures, a quick run-down of the ones you see (in top-to-bottom order):
-- Prepartion at the Antrim Presbyterian Church the night before
-- Our first customers (from Edmunds Hardware and Antrim Lumber
-- Delivery of a free meal to a happy recipient at Antrim Village
-- Delivery of another free meal at Antrim Village
-- Great smiles from Club President Linda Ward and Lion (and State Senator) Bob Flanders

Technically the first meals may have been purchased by Peter at the Antrim Post Office, who was kind enough to buy four (making sure everyone who was working with him was well-fed this morning). They were also the first delivery of the day, followed by Lions Alan Fahrner and Bob Hardy bringing 6 free meals to Antrim Village -- and as you can see, they were as welcomed as were the meals people ate in person at the church.

This set of images doesn't give a complete picture of all the people that helped -- including some children who were instrumental in both set-up beforehand and the clearing of tables during breakfast. We also had quite a few visiting Lions, including Vice District Governor Ray Hill and Zone Chair Dave Forest.

Thanks to all who participated and also those who enjoyed our cooking -- the funds generated are going to help provide a hearing machine for the Antrim Elementary School...

Whether you are a hunter or not, you can't beat the tremendous menu:

Eggs

Ham

Homemade baked beans

Biscuits

Home fries

Fresh brewed coffee, juice, and milk

New this year will be the option of "take-out" -- for the hunter or busy person who wants to grab-and-go.

What isn't new are the prices...we've maintained the inexpensive $5.00 per adult, $3.00 for children under 6 and seniors over 60. You can get them at the door or purchase them ahead of time at Tenney's Farm, Route 202, in Antrim.

All proceeds go back into the community, so you can help your neighbor as you help yourself to a scrumptious meal! :-)
